Information about requirements for becoming a licenced tradesperson.
A licence is required in NSW for the following:
-
residential building work valued at more than $5,000 (incl GST) including labour and materials
-
ALL specialist work regardless of its cost including electrical wiring, plumbing, drainage and gasfitting work and air conditioning and refrigeration work (except plug-in appliances).
There are different types of licences available to cover contracting to do trade or specialist work and also supervising those doing such work.
A person or company holding a contractor licence may advertise and contract to do the types or work described on the licence.
A person holding a qualified supervisor certificate may supervise and do the work described on the certificate but may not contract for work.
A person holding an endorsed contractor licence may advertise and contract to do the types of work described on the licence and may also supervise others doing the work. Endorsed contractor licences have ‘contractor licence (Q)’ printed on them to indicate that the holder is also a qualified supervisor.
