Definition of electrical work:

Electrical wiring work is the installation, repair, or alteration of any electrical installation including the supervision of such work.

An electrical installation is any fixed appliance, wire, fitting, meter, apparatus or other electrical equipment used to convey, measure, control and use electricity in a particular place.

Requirements:

Any person undertaking electrical work in NSW in either a residential or commercial building must be a licensed electrician. This applies to all electrical work regardless of the cost.

It is against the law in NSW to do electrical wiring work without a licence or certificate. Fines can be as high as $22,000 for an individual or $110,000 for a company found doing electrical work without a license.

Electrical wiring and electrical installations can be dangerous to people using them and can result in fire or electric shock if they are installed incorrectly. For this reason the law in NSW requires all electrical work to be completed by qualified persons who have shown themselves eligible to hold a license.
